Our annual Surrey ride saw a great turnout at Bramley Golf Club, who continue to make us most welcome even on a busy golfing day. A sport and social group identified themselves and set off into the Surrey countryside. Pity the rider who found himself in the wrong group – you know who you are!
Leafy lanes and gentle inclines ensured a steady pace, and the hum of conversation prevailed as the tour passed Winkworth Arboretum, before heading south to the open villages of Dunsfold and Cranleigh. A quick snack stop on Cranleigh Common saw the rider groups congregate again, before heading off to conquer the only significant climb of the day, Pitch Hill. The rain joined us for the final third of the ride, but with relatively quiet roads and a guest list of hardy souls the escape routes back were not required.
The riders returned, having completed 42 miles, to enjoy supper at the golf club and illuminating talks from Phil O’Connor, founder of Sportivephoto, and Bryan Steel, double Olympic medallist now channelling his talents into coaching cyclists of all levels.
