A different side of Surrey

Under slightly leaden skies, a group of 13 rolled out of Denbies vineyard on Saturday morning to join Chris Grove on one of his favourite routes through the South Weald.

Following a short, sharp ‘ramp’ about a mile in – ‘just to get the blood flowing’ – the rolling route meandered through quiet country lanes towards Rusper, where we made the turn, heading back up via Warnford to a welcome feed-stop at the Parrot Inn at Forest Green.

Fortified by cheese and biscuits (!), home-made banana cake and flap-jacks, we headed towards the north downs for the decidedly more lumpy second half of the ride. Holmbury Hill was a warm-up for the sting in the tail to come – the feared Whitedown Hill, which tops out at 20%. That conquered, it was a fast run across Ranmore Common before descending to the finish through the Denbies vineyard, where we were treated to stunning views over Box Hill and Dorking.

A great day out riding some of the less ridden lanes which Surrey has to offer….and the sun even made an appearance!
